Our mountains have so much to offer, but do we know it?

Our journey to Bedogno (Villa Minozzo) to discover art.

We live in a chaotic world. We are used to doing a lot of things, following the rhythm dictated by our society and feeling  the passing of time without paying too much heed.
But what if we took a breath, if we stopped hurrying and started seeing to feel and taste what life is really like?

Maybe things would be different, we would be different. And that was exactly what happened to us on an ordinary Saturday  afternoon.
We went to our native English teacher's house in order to discover the magical world she lives in which she created by herself.
And now we want you to discover it through us.
So close your eyes, switch off your mind and be ready to go on a memorable journey.

We asked many questions and she was really willing to answer them all, so why don't we introduce her?

Before we start: We used an easy legenda for a better understanding:

Q: question

A: answer

Q. Hi Pheona! Where do you come from? When did you come?

A. Hi girls. I was born in Scotland and lived there a big part of my life.  I studied in Glasgow and also have a family there. I came here 9 years ago.

Q. Why are you in Italy and, above all, why did you choose Bedogno?

A. To tell the truth, I do not know! I travelled a lot before deciding on Bedogno, I have always thought Italy to be an amazing place so I set off to discover the country.

My goal was to open an "art school” and I was looking for a relaxing and impressive place.

Actually it was not a real choice, the truth is that Bedogno (near Villa Minozzo) chose me and I have soon discovered it.

Q.Do you have a website? What kind of art school do you have?

A.The art school is very small. I have room for 6 people at a time, so tuition is on an individual basis.  I have two web sites. One is for B&B www.casaappennino.com and the other reaches people from all over the world, www.artholidaysinitaly.com  where people can see an example of what can be done in the school.

It does not matter if you are a beginner or you are at an advanced level. The aim is to do art and be inspired by the wonderful scenery, the clean air, and the friendly environment.

I have three apartments which are themed on the work of famous Italian painters,  "Michelangelo", "Caravaggio" and "Botticelli".

Each apartment contains at least one painting by the artist, a copy I did myself. I must admit that I am really pleased with the outcomes, they are similar to the original ones.

I put art in everything in the house: e.g. in the dining area there is a painting of "The Last Supper" in order to make the guests feel like they are in the painting, basically dining in and with art.

Q. But at this point we want to know, Did you attend art school?

A. I studied art at Glasgow School of Art for 4 years. There I specialized in Sculpture. To be sincere, it is the most useless thing a person could do.

Q. How can you define yourself? Are you more a painter or a sculptor?

A. I am a maker, mostly. I make things all the time: I make murals, mosaics, sculptures, paintings and I have helped the bricklayers in the rebuilding of the house.

Now I am also working on a barn restoration. It is what I hope will be my future house. In my own painting I specialise in portraits and figurative art.

Q. How long does it take to complete a painting?

A. Well, there is no answer to that. Many people ask me the same question, so I started to write down the hours that I spend painting.

I cannot count them in days, weeks and so on, it would be untrue. Maybe on a rainy day I am willing to paint more and on other days I am not really keen on doing it. I just paint when I feel like it.

Q.You have remade many famous paintings, but, is there a bit of "Pheona" in your artworks?

A. Sure there is. I always put a bit of my personal interpretation in it. I also make jokes with my artworks:

While entering the house you will be watched by a really famous young lady called "Gioconda", but a happier one, with a bigger smile and a softer expression.

I wanted to put the most famous and expensive painting of the world in my hallway, in my little house in Bedogno. Nobody ever expects that.

Even my "Primavera" by Botticelli is a a little altered. When I started working on it, I did it quickly. Soon I realized I had left a big portion of the wall empty. What I did was research and copy the style of the artist and put in another 2 subjects: I portrayed myself with a brush and also another figure as a Minotaur.

Q. While decorating your house, did you have a precise project?

A. I wanted my B&B to look like an art gallery, but without all that academic "Chat chat". I wanted people to dive into art and feel it.

Q. Do you have a nickname as an artist?

A. I used to sign my paintings with my surname "Kerr", but then I decided to make it more "Italian", now I usually sign them with "Kerra".

While visiting the house we tried to look at everything around us with a different state of mind. We know how stunning our mountains and landscapes are, but we tried to feel it in a different way. We were born here and we have been living here all our lives, so we tend not to really pay attention to our immense “patrimony”. We saw it through paintings and the way Pheona represented it is significant. There is this copy she made from Michelangelo’s “Cacciata dal Paradiso” with the Pietra of Bismantova painted in the middle of it, in the background, and then loads and loads of our landscapes hanging on her walls. Taking a significant distance from things we know is the best way to comprehend and appreciate them.

We immediately felt how much passion and hard work Pheona has put in this project. In every word we could understand how proud and happy she is.  And we couldn't do anything but feel admiration for what a strong woman like Pheona was able to do. She was able to make art out of nothing.

We must admit that this “journey” through art and passion has really affected us. We do not know whether it’s because of the power of art, what it makes you feel, or  what passion is able to create through recycling materials and inventiveness. We cannot understand it. Maybe it’s not to be understood, it is just as it has to be: inexplicable beauty.

Art has many ways of expressing itself, through strong images, through religious subjects, but above all through beauty.

Beauty has always been the fundamental principle of it, and the most sincere thing a human being could represent. It is completely related to our feelings, to our conception of the world outside and, we cannot deny it, we are doubtlessly attracted by it.

Forse tutto sarebbe diverso, noi saremmo diversi.

Q: domanda

A: risposta

Q: Ciao Pheona! Da dove vieni? E quando sei arrivata qui?

A: Ciao ragazze!

Q: Perché sei in Italia, e soprattutto, perché hai scelto Bedogno?

A: La mia scuola è molto piccola.

Q: Come puoi definirti?

A: Certamente.

Ora solitamente mi firmo come “Kerra”.

  1. Dear girls,
I’ve read with attention your article.
I agree with you that young Apennine people have to know better our mountains, but before all, in my opinion, our culture.
You could spread out your point of view with your own age, unfortunately adult can’t be able to build a new future for you and our amazing land.
I think that art and artists, like Pheona Kerra, could help us to find a new path to follow. I don’t know why, but usually foreign people can see possibilities that the natives don’t see.
You must excuse me, my English is basic but enough to make me understood.
    Hugs
