Stereotypes

 What is a stereotype?

Beatrice Ganapini, Gaia Fontanili, Matilde Briselli, Ana Maria Malo

If you look up the definition of what a stereotype is in your dictionary, it will tell you that it is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.

In simple words it is any commonly known public belief about a certain social group or a type of individual.

Often these ones are confused with prejudice, because both are based on a prior assumption.

Almost every culture or race has a stereotype which defines them. But such stereotypes are not just focused on different races and backgrounds, however. Gender stereotypes also exist, or even more sexual orientation ones. These last ones occur when someone has negative views on gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals (identified as homophobic).

While discussing this topic the question that comes to mind is: “why is it bad to stereotype?”.

Stereotyping is hurtful and also wrong, because putting someone constantly down based on your preconceived perceptions will not encourage them to succeed.

What’s more, stereotyping can lead to bullying, encouraging overbearing behavior that children carry into adulthood.

Italian and British stereotypes

Imagine you have to move or travel to Italy, what are the most common stereotypes that come to your mind when you think about Italy and Italian people? Are they true or false?

The most common are:

-          Pizza, pasta and mandolino: this is both true and false, in fact we actually love pasta and pizza, but the stereotype of the mandolino was born during the 50s when Italians moved to America and brought a small guitar to play some music and find some happiness in that sad situation;

-              We love coffee: and we do, at least the majority of the Italians love it;

-          Italians always have a tan: that’s false, especially if they are from the North. Usually, people from the South are tanned - but this is not a rule: not all the people from the North are blond, and not all those from the South have olive skin;

-          We love football: in fact even if you are not watching a match on TV, you can hear your neighbourhood cheering when their team score a goal;

-          Italian people are really friendly: true. They are generally quite a bit friendlier than other cultures, but don’t assume every single person will be lovely to you: we all have our bad days;

-          Italians are always loud and use their hand a lot when speaking: they are both true. We actually use our hands when we talk. A gesture is part of a concept, and even if we try not to move our hands while talking, we cannot resist. What’s more, we are really loud when we speak, but not because we are angry or deaf, it’s just our voice tone.

-          Italian families are huge. Even if nowadays it is not longer like this, in the past it was common to have more than 6 children. Nowadays things have changed, and every family unit usually has one or two children. However, lunches and dinners with the entire family are not rare in Italy: happy weekly reunions with just ‘a few uncles’ and their sons and daughters (more or less 40 people);

-          Italians are obsessed with fashion: even if it’s actually true that Italians think they dress better than people from other nationalities, it is not true to say that we are obsessed with fashion: if we do look good we are not working hard on it, meaning that it comes easy to us.

-          Italians are ‘Mummy’s boys’: this is false, even if sometimes you can find some truth in this stereotype. In fact, Italians have a stronger concept of “family” than in other cultures, and they rely on and have strong support from their families. However, it is not accurate to call them “Mummy’s boys”: they stay at their parents home just until they have the money to pay for their own flat or house. A “Mummy’s boy”, for Italians, is actually a grown up man that cannot do anything without the help of his parents.

The same thing happens with British people, of course. Here we have some examples:

  • British people drink tea, and this is one stereotype that, most of the time, is actually right;
  • British people drink a lot of alcohol. Well, in fact it is thought that when they don’t have a cup of tea in their hands they have a glass of beer or something alcoholic… but again it’s wrong to generalize.
  • They have never seen the sunshine: well, the weather in the UK is often rainy and foggy, but who knows, global warming might be coming to the rescue...
  • They get burnt easily when they are on holiday: this could be explained by the fact that they don’t see the sunshine very often during the year;
  • They are obsessed with the Royal Family: we have to underline the fact that they are proud of their Queen, but it isn’t true that they all love the Royal Family;
  • The Brits are super polite: it is more correct to say that they don’t like to be rude, in fact they use “sorry”, “thank you” and “please” a lot. It could sound weird but it is just their way of being.

Tell us what you think. Do you believe that stereotypes are usually true or false? Do they influence your way of thinking?

Stereotipi

- Pizza, pasta e mandolino, questo è vero e falso, infatti gli italiani amano la pasta e la pizza, ma lo stereotipo del mandolino è nato negli anni '50 quando gli italiani si sono trasferiti in America e hanno portato una piccola chitarra per suonare un po 'di musica e trovare un po' di felicità in quella triste situazione;

- Gli italiani amano il caffè, ed è così, almeno la maggior parte degli italiani lo ama;

- Gli italiani hanno sempre l'abbronzatura, questo è falso, specialmente se vengono dal Nord. Di solito, le persone del Sud sono abbronzate, ma questa non è una regola: non tutte le persone del Nord sono bionde, e non tutte gli italiani del Sud hanno la pelle olivastra;

- Gli italiani amano il calcio, infatti anche se non state guardando la partita in TV, potete sentire il vostro vicino esultare quando la loro squadra fa un gol;

- Gli italiani sono davvero socievoli: vero. In genere sono un po 'più amichevoli di altre culture, ma non presumete che ogni italiano sia così: tutti noi abbiamo i nostri giorni cattivi;

- Le famiglie italiane sono numerose. Nel passato era comune per le famiglie italiane avere più di 6 bambini. Al giorno d'oggi le cose sono cambiate e ogni famiglia di solito ha uno o due figli. Tuttavia, i pranzi e le cene con tutta la famiglia non sono rari in Italia: felici riunioni settimanali con solo "pochi zii" e i loro figli e figlie (più o meno 40 persone);

- Gli italiani sono ossessionati dalla moda, anche se è vero che gli italiani pensano di vestirsi meglio delle persone di altre nazionalità, non è vero che siamo ossessionati dalla moda: se ci vestiamo bene, questo non significa che ci impegniamo troppo per farlo;

- Gli inglesi bevono il tè, e questo è uno stereotipo che, la maggior parte delle volte, è vero;

-Gli inglesi bevono molto alcol. Si pensa che quando non hanno una tazza di tè nelle loro mani hanno un bicchiere di birra o qualcosa di alcolico;

-Non hanno mai visto il sole, si pensa così a causa del loro clima, che è quasi ogni giorno piovoso e nebbioso;-Si scottano facilmente quando sono in vacanza. Questo potrebbe essere spiegato dal fatto che non vedono molto spesso il sole durante l'anno;

-Sono ossessionati dalla famiglia reale, dobbiamo sottolineare il fatto che sono orgogliosi della loro regina, ma non è vero che tutti amano la famiglia reale;
