The victims of the Berlin Wall

Elena Azzolini e Natalia Monti

We have decided to write this article on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall and in memory of its victims.

It’s important to talk about this event as a lesson for the leaders of oppressive regimes because no iron curtain can stop the desire of people for freedom..

First of all,  the term “dead of the Berlin Wall” means “people who died from the 13th August to 9th October 1989”  in the attempt to get over it.

Most of the victims died because of the guards, who had the order to kill everyone who tried to cross the wall (at least about 138 people died). Others lost their lives after some fatal accident (from about 30 to 40 people).

It is not possible to say how many people were killed because lots of time deaths were cloaked in mystery and families of the victims had to keep silent in order not to face reprisal.

About 138 people died between 1961 and 1989 trying to escape. The number of victims was higher in the first period after the building of the wall. Maybe because after years people tried to escape less or maybe because the level of security was higher.

About five thousand people were able to escape and reach western Berlin.

Ida Siekmann

The first person who died trying to cross the  Berlin wall was Ida Siekmann on the 22nd of August 1961. Her home was in Bernauer street, which was the one adjacent to the Wall. It was for that reason that she tried to jump over the wall, but she badly hurt herself and died.

The incident evoked a wave of outrage on the west side of the city.

Neighborhood residents and passersby were shocked. The press reported about it in detail. Following an official memorial service, a wreath was placed in front of the building at Bernauer Straße 48. It bore the inscription: “To the victim denied freedom.” A few days later a monument was erected at the site for Ida Siekmann.

Chris Gueffroy

The last person to be killed by the border guards of the Berlin Wall was Chris Gueffroy. He was trying to reach western Germany when a guard shot him. He wanted to become an actor or a pilot but he couldn’t because of the totalitarian regime (known as RDT) under which he was obliged to live. There, no freedom of thought was allowed. By law he was obliged to join the army, but he refused, so as a punishment he wasn’t allowed to go to university. After having worked for many years as a waiter, in 1989 he was forcibly drafted. For that reason he decided to escape with his friend Christian Guadian on the fifth of February 1989. In fact, it appeared that the guards were not permitted to shoot people who were trying to cross the wall any longer. However, that turned out to be fake news. They passed under the Britz channel of Berlin and at midnight they started climbing the wall (which was about 3 meters high); it was at that time that the alarms rang and the guards opened fire, killing Chris and hurting his friend, who was then imprisoned for 3 years. The regime tried to keep the tragedy hidden. However, it was not possible because it became such a shameful story that it fuelled lots of internal protests.

Why did people living in eastern Berlin want to escape and reach the other side? It happened because the eastern side was under a regime that persecuted people: it was repressive, based on terror, and justice was based on violence: the police imprisoned and tortured all citizens considered disloyal to the State.
