The story of Leonarda Cianciulli

Today I’m going to tell you a horror story. There are many stories I’ve heard about, but one of the most horrifying is the story of Leonarda Cianciulli, a serial killer who committed her crimes during the 40s of the XXth century.

It’s incredible to believe that a woman made soap and desserts with the bodies of 3 ladies. What a horrible crime!

On the other hand, such crimes may give us a clue of how a serial killer’s mind works and kills.

But first let’s find out some information about her life.

Leonarda was born in Avellino and was the last of 8 children. Her father died when she was only 16 and the relationship with her mother was bad, so that Leonarda thought that her mother had cursed her (she became pregnant 17 times, but only 4 kids survived). For this reason Leonarda started to perform rituals to nullify the curses.

From this we can surely see that Leonarda had a twisted mind, which led her to kill 3 women.

After her marriage, she moved to Correggio with her husband and her children.

The family was not rich, in fact  her husband Raffaele, who worked in an office,didn't earn much.

Leonarda was a  housekeeper and thanks to her strong personality was also head of the family, which was unusual at that time.

She had lots of friends and she used to give them sweets and cakes and very soon she became famous for her recipes.

It's true, Leonarda was the best at cooking, but later on Correggio would discover the ingredients of the cakes.

An important event was the birth of her daughter Norma, because after Norma's birth the family became richer, as a matter of fact Leonarda would hire 2 servants (in different periods). Someone says that she started selling cookies and sweets to earn money, but she had too much money.

She must have become richer in a different way and that's how the murders started.

The first woman Leonarda murdered was Faustina Setti, a widow in search of a new life.

Leonarda told Faustina that she could help her, the only thing to do was to sell everything and not tell anyone. But Faustina spoke to some friends and said that she was going to stay by some relatives and that she had sold everything to Leonarda.

But when the relatives came to Correggio and did not find Mrs. Setti, her friends understood that something had happened to her. Of course, they didn't see Faustina anymore.

A few months later there was another woman, who dreamed about a new life. She was a teacher (actually she did not work for a school) and her name was Francesca Clementina Soavi.

For apparently no reason, she emptied her bank account, giving all her money to Leonarda, who promised her a job as a headmaster in a school, not saying where.

Why was she not suspicious? At least you should know where you are going, but a new life is always appealing.

After a sleepless night Mrs.Soavi went to Leonarda's house and disappeared.

After some weeks Francesca's friends received postcards from Pola which said that Mrs.Soavi had started her new life.

“She ended up in the big pot, like the other 2, but her flesh was fat: when it was dissolved I added a bottle of cologne and, after a long boiling, creamy soap came out”

This is what Leonarda confessed to the police, talking about the last victim.

Her name was Virginia Cacioppo and was a retired lyrical singer who Leonarda helped in the search for a new life. However, she was suspicious, because she understood that Leonarda was dangerous. Virginia asked to look for her in case she hadn’t returned in 80 days.

After visiting Leonarda no one saw Virginia ever again.

In the next months the investigations started.

There were elements that led to Leonarda, for example a bank account of Mrs. Cacioppo was found and the police, after having done their investigation, were able to link them to Leonarda. In fact Virginia had gave Leonarda some checks.

When the two servants were questioned, it came out that a strange smell was in Leonarda's house while she was making soap.

When the police checked Leonarda’s garden, they found bones, the bones of the 3 ladies.

She would claim that she was not  responsible of the murders, then she would confess her guilt in Faustina's homicide, then the other two. She also accused  her mother, saying that she was performing rituals to nullify the curse.Then she claimed that she had been helped, then that she was the only one who killed, although someone must have helped her, and this person was probably her son Giuseppe: in fact the police would discover that the postcards signed by mrs.Soavi were sent by him.

“I want to show you what I’ve done, I only need a person to show you how I did it.”

This is what she said during her trial in Reggio Emilia.

How creepy these words are.

She confessed to having done everything, admitting that she made soap with the bodies of 3 ladies and for that her nickname is still today “the soap-maker of Correggio”.

After the trial she was sent to a mental asylum, where she wrote an autobiography, revealing more details about the homicides.

This horror tragedy makes us reflect on how cruel a human being can be.

The “soap-maker” is still in the mind of Correggio and will be remembered as one of the most cruel, shocking and crazy killers of all time.

Oggi vi racconterò una storia dell’orrore.

Ci sono molte storie di cui ho sentito parlare, ma la più orripilante è la storia di Leonarda Cianciulli, un’omicida seriale che commise i suoi omicidi negli anni ‘40 del XX secolo.

È incredibile credere che una donna abbia fatto sapone e dolcetti con i corpi di 3 signore.

Che crimine orribile!

D’altro canto, storie come questa ci possono forse far capire qualcosa su come la mente di un omicida seriale funziona e uccide.

Ma prima vediamo qualche informazione sulla sua vita.

Leonarda nacque ad Avellino ed era l’ultima di 8 figli. Suo padre morì quando aveva solo 16 anni e la relazione con sua madre era pessima, così che Leonarda iniziò a pensare che sua madre l’avesse maledetta (rimase incinta 17 volte, ma solo 4 figli sopravvissero).

Per questa ragione Leonarda iniziò a fare dei rituali per annullare le maledizioni.

Da ciò possiamo vedere chiaramente che Leonarda aveva una mente contorta, che la  portò a uccidere 3 donne.

Dopo il matrimonio si trasferì a Correggio col marito ed i figli.

La famiglia non ere ricca, infatti suo marito Raffaele, che lavorava in un ufficio, non guadagnava molto.

Leonarda era casalinga e grazie alla sua forte personalità era anche la figura dominante in famiglia, il che era inusuale a quel tempo.

Aveva molti amici, ai quali regalava dolci e torte e molto presto divenne famosa per le sue ricette.

È vero, Leonarda era un’ottima cuoca, ma in seguito Correggio scoprirà gli ingredienti delle torte.

Un importante evento fu la nascita della figlia Norma, perché dopo la nascita di Norma la famiglia divenne più ricca, difatti Leonarda assumerà due governanti (in periodi diversi). Si dice che avesse iniziato a vendere biscotti e dolcetti per guadagnare soldi, ma questi soldi erano troppi.

Doveva essere diventata ricca in un altro modo ed è così che iniziarono gli omicidi.

La prima donna che Leonarda uccise fu Faustina Setti, una vedova in cerca di una nuova vita.

Leonarda disse a Faustina che poteva aiutarla, l’unica cosa da fare era vendere tutto e non dire niente a nessuno. Ma Faustina parlò con qualche amica e disse che si stava trasferendo presso parenti e che aveva venduto tutto a  Leonarda.

Ma quando i parenti arrivarono a Correggio e non trovarono la signora Setti, le amiche capirono che le era successo qualcosa. Ovviamente, non videro Faustina mai più.

Pochi mesi dopo ci fu un’altra donna che sognava una nuova vita. Era una maestra (in realtà non lavorava per una scuola) ed il suo nome era Francesca Clementina Soavi.

Per nessuna ragione apparente, svuotò il suo conto bancario, dando tutti i soldi a Leonarda  che le promise un lavoro come preside in una scuola ma senza dirle dove.

Perché non era sospettosa? Si dovrebbe almeno sapere dove ci si sta trasferendo, ma una nuova vita fa sempre gola.

Dopo una notte insonne la signora Soavi andò da Leonarda e sparì.

Dopo qualche settimana le amiche di Francesca ricevettero delle cartoline da Pola: queste informavano che la signora Soavi aveva iniziato la sua nuova vita.

“Finì anche lei nel pentolone, come le altre due, ma la sua carne era grassa: quando fu dissolta aggiunsi una bottiglia di colonia e, dopo una lunga bollitura, vennero fuori delle saponette cremose”.

Questo è ciò che Leonarda confessò alla polizia, parlando dell’ultima vittima.

Il suo nome era Virginia Cacioppo ed era una cantante lirica e Leonarda l’aiutò nella ricerca di una nuova vita. Tuttavia era più sospettosa, perché capì che Leonarda era pericolosa. Così Virginia chiese di essere cercata se non fosse tornata entro 80 giorni.

Dopo aver visitato Leonarda nessuno vide Virginia mai più.

Nei mesi successivi iniziarono le indagini.

C’erano elementi che conducevano a Leonarda, per esempio fu trovato un assegno bancario della signora Cacioppo e la polizia, dopo aver fatto tutte le ricerche, fu in grado di collegarlo a Leonarda. Infatti Virginia le aveva dato alcuni assegni bancari.

Quando le 2 governanti furono interrogate, si scoprì che c’era uno strano odore in casa di Leonarda mentre faceva il sapone.

Quando la polizia controllò il giardino di Leonarda, trovarono ossa, le ossa delle 3 donne.

Lei dichiarò che non era responsabile degli omicidi, poi confessò la sua colpevolezza nell'omicidio di Faustina, in seguito anche negli altri due. Inoltre accusò anche sua madre, dicendo che stava facendo rituali per annullare la maledizione.

Successivamente dichiarò di essere stata aiutata, cambiando poi idea e dicendo che era stata l'unica ad uccidere, sebbene dovesse essere stata aiutata da qualcuno. Il complice fu probabilmente suo figlio Giuseppe, infatti la polizia scoprì che le cartoline firmate dalla signora Soavi erano state spedite da lui.

“Voglio mostrarvi cosa ho fatto, ho solo bisogno di una persona per farvi vedere come”.

Questo è ciò che disse durante il processo a Reggio Emilia. Come sono spaventose queste parole.

Confessò tutto, ammettendo di aver fatto il sapone con i corpi delle 3 donne e per questo il suo soprannome è ancora oggi “la saponificatrice di Correggio”.

Dopo il processo fu internata in un manicomio, dove scrisse un’autobiografia, rivelando ulteriori dettagli sugli omicidi.

Questa storia d’orrore ci fa riflettere su quanta crudeltà possa esistere nell’essere umano. La “saponificatrice” è ancora nella mente di Correggio e resterà una delle più crudeli, sconvolgenti e folli assassine di tutti i tempi.
