Nowadays we often hear people talking about the patriarchy, a concept related to feminism and many other topics. But what does it really mean? What’s like to live in a patriarchal society?

The word patriarchy comes from the Greek πατριάρχης (patriarkhēs), which means "the rule of the father". It is a compound of words that mean "homeland", "family" and "domination".

Historically, this word has been used to talk about the autocratic rule by the male head of a family and to explain the dominance of males in society.

Some research shows that societies during prehistoric times were egalitarian, so the male dominance didn't exist yet. The concept of patriarchy was born during the dominations of big civilizations. Aristotle himself, in his works, portrays women as morally, intellectually and physically inferior to men, sees women as the property of men, says that women's role in society was to reproduce and to serve men in the household, and saw male domination of women as natural and virtuous.

Meanwhile, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the first waves of the feminist movement started to spread their ideas, which were openly against the patriarchy.

Feminist theorists have written extensively about patriarchy as a primary cause of women's oppression: feminist theory tries to destroy gender inequality and focuses on gender politics, power relations and sexuality, and also on the promotion of women's rights. Discrimination, stereotyping, objectification (especially sexual objectification), oppression, and patriarchy itself are the themes tackled by feminism.

Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own" explores these themes: the author says that in the past a lot of female authors had written masterpieces and beautiful books. But  they were disadvantaged because of their position in society and in the household: men could work and write freely in their studies whereas women could not. If female authors had had a room of their own to concentrate and work in, they would have written even better books. One of the examples Woolf explains about inequality between men and women is well known: she imagines what would have happened if William Shakespeare had had a sister. His sister, who would have been just as smart and as talented in writing as he was, wouldn’t have been famous like him. She couldn’t have studied, or gone to school, or  published her works. All of this, just because she was a woman.

These situations are a result of the patriarchy, but people often don't say that patriarchy makes men suffer, too. Men who live under the system of patriarchy feel pressured, because they feel the weight of the entire society on their backs. They have to conform to a standard of toxic masculinity, to compete with one another, and to prove their manhood by surrendering their individuality and denying their humanity. It inevitably leads to physical and psychological distress.

In conclusion, even if nowadays the patriarchy isn't as strong as before, there is still a lot of work to be done to improve our society, discourage gender discrimination and make everyone feel better and an important part of the world.
