Nowadays the social network has become necessary: everyone, including adults and children, can’t live without them, however we aren’t always aware of  the subconscious effects we are subject to or of the consequences they might create. Especially in this period, when social relationships have weakened, the cyber world has become stronger and stronger, given that the only source of communication or meeting has been the video call or text messages. Let’s see what all this entails.

Many of us are excessively addicted to mobile phones and this causes an almost complete detachment from reality and social relationships, particularly because we spend the greatest part of our time on social media, including during the night. This precious time could be employed to develop friendships, new hobbies and to spend more time outside. The contact lost with reality can cause a bad condition of mental health.

Scientists have shown that too frequent use of social networks increases problems connected to anxiety and depression. 46 % of teenagers feel inappropriate seeing other people’s lives, since we always think that  others have perfect lives,  considering that everyone shows only the best things. Everything is controlled and focused on how we appear: if a picture posted receives only a few likes, we don’t feel worthy and this triggers frustration. Besides the inferiority, we feel envious, specifically because the hard reality is hardly ever shown; for instance nobody posts a picture in a bad moment.

Furthermore, we are deeply influenced by what happens on social media.  Influencers, who have a great number of followers, affect our lives in a positive way, sending beneficial messages, but also in a negative way, because taking them as a reference, we are tempted to emulate them in their mistakes as well.

Despite this there aren’t only negative aspects. Social media gives us the possibility to interact with other people, share cool moments and make new friends. Especially during this pandemic they  have helped us to keep in touch. We hope that in the future the positive aspects will outweigh the negative ones,  thus we will be living in the virtual world more peacefully and in safety.
